"Transparent SMILE (Monty Cantsin Performing With White Colours)" by Monty Cantsin, 16mm sound, 17 minutes, 1984-1985. This is broken into 2 parts here on YouTube b/c of technical limitations. This is pt 1. In 1984 I attended & participated in the 8th International neoist Apartment Festival in London. This was hosted by Monty Cantsin (in London at the time but usually based in Dundee) who had a squat / Council House there that was the center of operations. Monty Cantsin (London) heard about neoism for the 1st time & met myself, Monty Cantsin (BalTimOre), the organizer, Monty Cantsin (London/Dundee), & the founder of neoism, Monty Cantsin (Montréal), & informed us of his magazine "SMILE" - the 2nd issue of wch he was then working on. Since SMILE was in the same spirit of collective identity that the name Monty Cantsin was, the neoists adopted SMILE as our magazine. A less successfully incorporated Open Pop Star type project was the proposed collective identity 'band' that also originated w/ Monty Cantsin (London): White Colours. When I returned to BalTimOre I became the 1st distributor of SMILE in the us@ & started disseminating its Open Context ASAP. I wrote a defining proposal for the overall Open Collective Identity Context that began w/ "the concept of Monty Cantsin: Monty Cantsin is a name chosen/invented by Monty Cantsin to refer to an international star who can be anyone. the name is fixed, the people using it aren't. what is usually an egotistical role ("star") becomes abstracted by it's disassociation from a particular person. when someone thinks/feels that the star context/advantages might be useful they can "wear" the Monty Cantsin identity." This text then went on to define "the concept of SMILE: SMILE is a name chosen/invented by Monty Cantsin to refer to an international magazine with multiple origins. the name is fixed, the type of magazines using it aren't. the purpose of many different magazines using the same name can be an experiment with creating a situation for which no one is responsible - an organ of the Generation Positive from no one in particular. as such, it plagiarizes postal art network commonpress magazines." This text went on to explain other aspects of the project & to propose an ASSEMBLING publication made entirely of transparencies (each contributor to submit 100) on the subject of "Monty Cantsin performing with White Colours". I then had the text translated from English into German, Italian, & Farsi & disseminated it widely thru postal interaction networking circles. Over the next yr, I rc'vd contributions from 22 Monty Cantsins from 15 cities in 8 countries: us@, Italy, West Germany, England, Belgium, Holland, Japan, & Canada. These transparencies were then filmed as animation materials by 3 BalTimOre-based filmmakers: Monty Cantsin, Monty Cantsin, & Monty Cantsin. I edited the soundtrack together using an electronic soundtrack from 2 more BalTimOreans: Monty Cantsin & Monty Cantsin & overlaid some more sounds that had been contributed to an issue of SMILE edited in Montréal. These sounds mainly came from Monty Cantsin (Montréal), Monty Cantsin (Tepoztlan), Monty Cantsin (LA), & Monty Cantsin (London/Dundee). A technical note of some possible interest to filmmakers is that the scratching was done both on the original reversal positive & on the internegative - so that the scratching's both positive & negative: white & black. - November 7, 2010 notes from Monty Cantsin (BalTimOre/Pittsburgh)
